Also the standard of accommodation is going up so that some of the cheaper offerings provide you with excellent facilities. It’s worth looking for "Panzió" or "Zimmer Frei" signs, this means that you may find a room or small apartment.

University dormitories are available during July and August and this is another option. Private lodging is always cheaper and if you arrive in Budapest without anything arranged you may be offered private accommodation.
